I fully intended this blanket to look like a giraffe; however, if you remove the horns, it really looks more like a llama!
Oh, well, what are you going to do? I think he’s cute either way. 🙂

The blanket is crocheted entirely using double crochets. I call it a beginner + pattern because there are so many color changes. Since I made the blanket without breaking the yarn (just hiding it on the back side), there were times that the skeins got tangled up, which led to some frustrating moments. Think of it as a great way to learn patience!
I chose Red Heart Super Saver Yarn in Cafe Latte (brown), Black, Medium Thyme (green), Hot Red (bright red), Cherry Red (darker red), Saffron (yellow), Carrot (orange), and Pumpkin (optional for the border). The hook used was 5.00mm.
The graphs below are in Google Sheets. I converted the pattern from Excel to Google Sheets so it would be more accessible. This did cause a little bit of warping for some of the shapes used.
Use the chart at the top to create the image. Each block is a stitch.

The blanket is worked from the BOTTOM UP. So ch 194, dc in 4th ch from hook and each ch across (Row 89 in document). Then proceed to Row 88 (ch 3 counts as a stitch). Each row should have 192 stitches (ch 3 counts as 1 stitch, dc2tog counts as 1 stitch).
Odd rows are read from RIGHT to LEFT <–
Even rows are read from LEFT to RIGHT –>

You’ll be asked to make a copy in Google Sheets. This makes it possible for you to edit your copy without changing the original. You can mark off stitches or rows that you have completed.
If you’d rather have a written pattern with some extra tips and ticks, you can purchase a PDF pattern here.
Happy crocheting!
